3 Common Challenges When Starting Your Journey To Food FreedomMar 31, 2021
As we've any journey we take, we'll face some challenges along the way. The journey to manifest food freedom isn't linear. You'll have great moments but, you'll also face some challenges. The most important thing here is to make sure that you don't allow these roadblocks to turn into setbacks.
Especially when you're just starting out, things can get overwhelming. That's why I wanted to address some of the most common challenges I see women face when they stop dieting and start to eat intuitively.
It's important to know those challenges so that you're prepared and know how to handle them in ways that allow you to continue moving forward.
Like so many things in life, it's all about consistency and practice. The longer you stay on this journey to easier it gets. Nothing is easy at the beginning.
That something you always need to remind yourself of so that you can continue to manifest your dream life with food freedom.
3 Common Challenges Women Face On Their Journey To Food Freedom:
- Trying to implement everything at once
- Turning Intuitive Eating into a new diet by seeing it as a new set of rules
- Trying to do it all alone without support
So let’s dive deeper into each one of them:
1. Trying to implement everything at once.
Many of my clients used to struggle with this. Once they started working with me, they told me that they've tried to start eating intuitively. They'd read all the books and watch all the videos, filling themselves up with all the information they could find.
The excitement to try something new often leads us into trying to implement everything at once. That is exactly where things backfire.
By trying to change your behavior from one side to the other in a short amount of time is simply not sustainable. All it does is overwhelm you and take away your motivation so that you might end up giving up before you even started.
Instead, try to implement one thing after the other. Allow yourself to take the time because after all, you've probably been dieting for years.
It's not possible to just step away from it and that mentality within a few days. Sustainable change takes time.
2. Turning Intuitive Eating into a new diet by seeing it as a new set of rules.
Intuitive eating is about honoring your body's needs. It's about listening to our body, aka eating when you're hungry, stopping when you're full, eating what you feel like eating, and so on.
The challenge here is that it may happen that you turn those guiding principles into a new set of rules to follow. For example, you might start telling yourself that you should not eat past your fullness level or not eat emotionally. You turn them into things you "should" or "should not" do.
This is a problem because it can trigger you to binge and overeat when you end up "failing".
That's what happened to me when I fast started with Intuitive Eating. I used to feel ashamed and guilty when I would end up eating due to my emotions. What happened then was that same old story I experienced when I was still dieting.
I'd tell myself that I failed and would then end up binging again by telling myself I'll just start eating intuitively again tomorrow.
3. Trying to do it all alone without support
If you're anything like me, you might have isolated yourself a bit because, over the last years, your main priority was dieting and exercising.
You might even feel like something is wrong with you and that others wouldn't understand. But, it's actually so important to open up to others, to ask for help.
Whether it's opening up to a family member, friends, or to some professional support. Asking for help is NEVER a sign of weakness, especially if you've been struggling for a long time already.
